Preventive Measures (Housebreaker)

-Lock all doors and windows when leaving the home unattended, even for a short while.- Keep large sums of cash in banks and expensive jewelleries in safe deposit boxes.

- Do not hide keys under the doormat, in a flowerpot or on top of the electricity meter box outside the house.

- Do not leave notes outside of the house announcing your absence from home.

- Leave a light and radio on at night to give an impression that the occupants are home.

- Cancel all deliveries (eg newspapers, magazines, etc.) when you are away from home for a few days.

- Change all locks when your house keys are lost or stolen.

- Install security alarm system. Ensure that it is tested periodically and in working condition.

- Switch on the system when house is left unattended; before retiring to bed; or in unoccupied rooms if the premise is huge even when the occupants are at home.

- Ask your immediate neighbours to keep an eye on your
house while you are away.

- Keep your handphone within easy reach, be contactable.

- Inform your Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) of your absence if you are away from home for a few days.

- Keep a lookout in your neighbourhood for any suspicious person(s) who are loitering.

How to prevent Vandalism ?

Vandalism is best prevented through increased security, public awareness and police involvement. The following steps explain how to prevent vandalism.

1)Flood Lights
Install motion sensor flood lights. Creating a well-lit area will deter vandals from trespassing on the property. Running flood lights on a motion sensor will conserve energy and will automatically illuminate areas vandals try to approach. Vandals are less likely to commit crimes against properties that are highly visible.

2) Notify your neighbours. Whether the vandalism is being committed against a home or business, surrounding neighbours should be made aware of any vandalism when it occurs. Creating awareness will keep the community alert for suspicious persons and activities. Exchange contact information with neighbors so you can be notified in the event any vandalism is witnessed.

3)Notify your local police department, and file a police report for any vandalism that occurs. Filing a police report will help document each vandalism incident and the damage that was caused. Request that the police increase its patrols in your area if repeated vandalism occurs. Increasing police presence will deter vandals.

4 )Surveillance Cameras
Install surveillance cameras. Place the cameras in areas that have been targeted by vandalism. Position cameras so that they are out of reach and cannot be tampered with. Having a recording of the vandalism being committed can help law enforcement identify and catch the perpetrator.

5)Limit access to the property. Keep all doors, windows and gates locked to prevent vandals from entering the property. Install unbreakable glass in windows to avoid damage from thrown objects. Park all vehicles in a secure garage when they are not in use.

Mail from Residence in our neighbourhood

Last night, I was parking my car at Blk 10 level 3 multi-storey carpark and I saw a bunch of student vandalising! I cannot believe it, its very terrible of them to do such things to another’s car, no respect shown. See the pictures I attached? All these cars are sprayed with paint and scratched. Hope you can forward this email to all our neighbours to warn them that vandals are around and making trouble for us.

Hope everyone can be on the lookout for each other and inform suspicious characters in our neighbourhoods. And by any chance, do you know the policeman Pete right? Maybe you can check with him on any tips for us when parking our cars?

Tips to prevent Crimes :

1. Avoid taking the lift with a suspicious person.

2. Purchase a loud car alarm system.
3. Install motion detector cameras.
4. Park the car in view of an external camera.
5. Keep any valuables or other attractive items hidden.
6. Learn and be aware of emergency hotline(s).

7. Call the Police immediately '999'.

8. Avoid parking on the street or near the street when possible.

Ways of being Vigilant towards Terrorism.

When you find anything/ object/ item unattended :

Location of it :

- Is the item found in a sensitive or high-risk areas?

- Is it easily noticeable? or is is hidden?

Type of Item:

- Is the item a typical "Lost & Found" item?

- Is it unlikely to be left behind by a forgetful person?

How dangerous the object might be ?

- Oily stains or discolouration on the wrapping materials.

- Excessive use of securing materials such as strings and masking tapes.

- Trace of unusual smells like that of almond or marzipan.

- Wires or aluminium foil protruding from the item

- Clock-like ticking sound emitting from the item.

What is that object ?

If the item is NON-SUSPICIOUS:

- Treat it as a "Lost & Found" item and hand it over to the security personnel or owner of establishment.

If item is SUSPICIOUS :

- Do not touch or open it.

- Inform security personnel or the owner of establishment.

- Call the Police.

Once after everything is cleared :

Firstly, wait for any further instructions ...

- Assist to gather your belonging to facilitate identification of suspicious items.

You can do the following to help :

- Look around you for any unattended items BUT do not touch them.

- Evaluate whether the unattended items are suspicious.

- Report all suspicious items to security personnel or the Police.

- Take further instructions from security personnel or the Police.
